Police brutality

This video makes me sick: UCLA Police Taser Student

A guy gets handcuffed, then tasered, and he’s just lying there on the ground when they zap him again and again. If what those police did isn’t illegal, it should be. Someone needs to be fired and sent to jail- there’s just no excuse for that kind of brutality. The guy was handcuffed and not fighting back- what possible purpose is there in this electrocution other than to inflict pain for not obeying? This isn’t Judge Dredd, where the police are authorized to dole out punishment on the spot. We have a judicial system where put on trial, are allowed to defend themselves, and only punished according to sentences if found guilty. We don’t even have corporal punishment as a penalty in the US.

I think that even worse than how the cops acted is how the student body acted. I’m glad they got it on video, but I felt horrible seeing a perspective of someone who is milling around in a crowd, surrounded by people who are doing practically nothing to challenge the police. What the fuck.

New job, welding

I’m still reluctant to blog too much about work- it seems like people only ever get in trouble for doing that. I think that as long as I don’t mention my company by name or go into too many details, I won’t accidentally come up in search results when people search for the company.

Anyway, the new job is really cool so far. I’ve been doing far more engineering design work than I was doing at my last job, and that’s extremely satisfying. Tomorrow I’m going to be doing some aluminum welding- something I’ve never done before. I’ve welded steel before, but not aluminum. It’s supposed to be more difficult, so I’ll have to take care and do it right.
