Ok, venting here:
One of the worst things you can do when you name a file is to include a word like “Current” or “master” or “latest” or “new”, “revised”, “final”, “release” (with no date), or that sort of thing.
These words are just confusing, and they are almost as confusing wihen you have a good document version control system in place. Descriptive file names and helpful comments are essential to being able figure out where the hell important information is. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to keep a “readme” file in each directory to describe why each of the files is there.
Likewise, it’s a great idea to include a descriptive subject heading and a short note when you email someone a file. Trying to search inside attachments can really bite in some email programs, and if you’re looking for a picture it might be impossible.
I wish RPI had done an organized short course on this crap.
Concerts!!
Kendra and I are going to see Weezer, Foo Fighters, and Hot Hot Heat on October 28th at the Oakland Arena. I’m really psyched! Also, we’re going to see Death Cab for Cutie at the Warfield (a smaller venue, so we really get a good show) some time in November, I think ther 13th.
I think that tickets here cost about the same as they do in Troy or Chicago, but since everything else is so expensive here the tickets seemed like a bargain.
Ok, so here’s the first picture of my new project-

It’s kind of surprisingly OK sounding, but it definitely needs to be rebuilt in wood, and I’m starting to think that it desperately needs a tweeter. This little driver can do some surprising bass! Not very loudly, but it goes really low. It can also go loud if it doesn’t have to go low. The treble, though, leaves something to be desired. It’s got a slighly harsh sound way up high. I think I’m going to build a crossover for it and use a real tweeter. Something more like this:

But I don’t think I can do such cool cabinets.
Haircuts are something that guys who move around a lot have trouble with. I have never had someone cut my hair often enough for me to tell them, “Just cut it like you always do” and it’s not often enough for them to remember.
I think that it would be really efficient for a guy who’s just received a good haircut to take some mug shots, and to save these for the next time he gets his hair cut on the road. “Just do it like this picture, that’s how I like it.”
Speaker news-
Today I received my Aurasound NS3-193-8A three inch full-range speakers, and wow am I excited! I hooked one of the speakers up to Kendra’s CD player and had a listen to a Foo Fighters song or two (Doll, and others from Color and the Shape) and WOW. These things sound phenomenal. If I can get it all to work properly, we will have some good tunes here.
I’ve been building enclosures out of foam-core, aluminum stock, and epoxy since this weekend. It seems like a great way to make speakers- it’s light and stiff enough that it should make a good barrier between the inside of a box an the outside. Unfortunately, I missed a part of the equation. Because it’s so very light, the speaker cone’s mass starts to matter, and the vibrations are able to shake the foam a lot more than I would have liked. I will need to re-evaluate how to build these.
Right now I can tell that I’ll need something that weighs more, and also something that’s just plain stiffer. I still don’t have woodworking tools, or much ability to work with wood here. I think that my next move might involve plaster of paris. Anyway, I’ll post a bunch of pictures when this is done.
edit- this guy has a project using this type of driver- http://www.timn8er.com/Aurasound%20NS3.htm
I wish I had seen this episode!
