FARK.com: Comments Thingee (605176)

So I was just thinking- why is there never any science fiction where stuff isn’t going horribly wrong? I guess there are a few examples, but I can’t think of many. That could be because I just got done watching Alien and Alien: Ressurection on the Sci-Fi channel.

So- dystopian… I guess Ender’s Game sort of is, but the rest of that series is a bit more upbeat. There’s Neuromancer, which is actually pretty dark… The Andromeda Strain is scary- and the badguy is definitely science. Brave New World and 1984, they’re just crawling with ways for technology to make the world a shitty place.

The Foundation series, as well as I, Robot- they’re fairly optimistic. Isaac Asimov overall seemed to have a positive view of the future. By Heinlein I only ever read Stranger in a Strange Land and starship troopers, but they both used technology as a backdrop for the story. I dunno, I’m not doing some sort of book report here- just pondering why it seems like the most popular science fiction has people getting chased by robots and monsters.

I’ve said it before, but I think that science fiction can be a really important way to explore the possible outcomes of new technology. That’s one reason why I’m looking for a good book for the summer; it’s a good re-charge for my motivation when I study at school. Reminds me that we’re going someplace with all this, and that we can maybe decide where- if we give it some honest thought and effort. It’s also some good escapism.

So I was just cleaning my room, and I found the funniest damned picture… it was from senior prom, and it was of two people I knew. They went to prom together, and the girl is standing in front, and he is behind her- and he’s got a real huge grin on his face. His head is angled down, and he isn’t looking at the camera at all- he’s looking RIGHT AT HER TITS!!!

So, maybe I’ll post it, or maybe not- but I don’t want to do that to either of the parties concerned. If you ask me and promise not to show anyone else, maybe I’ll let you see it.

I was just thinking back to highschool when we (the drummers in marching band) got in trouble because we took the heads off of the drums and taped pornography to the insides of the drums. You could see it on some of the drums if you looked through vent holes. Anyway, it was funny as hell, because occasionally you would catch a bass drummer not paying attention to a damn thing, and maybe a third of the band knew why that was.

What brought this up? I took apart Mike’s subwoofer to check out the model number on the driver- checking out if we can put the drivers in some new boxes to make a subwoofer that would be decent for home theater. I should have put something in there- a naked chick at least- but I didn’t. Oh well, too late now. And in case you’re wondering- they are rockford fosgate 10″ subs, and they’re fine for cars- but not so hot for in the home. I really think that he’ll do best to sell them and buy a powered home theater amp.

Today was my last day at Menard’s. w00t. I am no longer a pusher.

Next bit of news- I am leaving for California on monday morning at 8 AM, and returning on the 15th. That’s just excellent.

I noticed that I have not been posting as much here as I was for a while; mostly i have noticed that the quality is what is lacking. My thought today was that some people seriously just ought to loose some weight. There was a woman who walked into Menard’s today who was nearly a 4 foot sphere. She tried to sit in our guest wheelchair, but couldn’t fit, so she sat on a chair by the door for a while. Ok, now here’s the part that gets you attacked for saying it: she should loose a few pounds. She just flat-out weighed too much to walk, or stand comfortably. Also, little kids need to stop fucking around in the store. When I point my finger in a kid’s face and say “DO NOT PLAY WITH THE AUTOMATIC DOOR” he ought to fucking listen to me, don’t you think? But no, he doesn’t think I mean it.

Anyway, that was the LAST of my Menard’s complaining ^_^

Ever.

I don’t know if it’s true what they say about masturbation making you go blind… but my eyes hurt.

Seriously, I think it’s allergies :*(

I can’t believe my summer is practically over! Tomorrow is my last day of work at Menard’s, and I got an email today asking if I can leave for California on friday. I said it was too soon- but now I’m thinking maybe I should have just said yes! I mean, shit- it was an offer of a plane ticket to a sunny place!

So yeah.. I’m excited to be going back to school. but Shit, I’ve got so much to do first!

One of those weird things you learn at school- sometimes when you put more insulation on something it cools off or heats up faster than if there was less. What’s up with that? That’s one of my favorite things about thermodynamics… that, and studying saturated water. HA!

Yeah! Hell yeah! I got a phone call just now, and I talked it over with my boss and the CEO, and they’re totally flying me out to California around the 4th or 5th or 6th of august, and sending me back around the 16th. I am so fucking jazzed! Hell yes! I am going to surf! I am going to party it up!

I was looking through some old family papers and pictures today, and I found (a copy of!) the marriage certificate of my great, great, (great….) grandparents from 1835. It listed his age as 29, and her age as 15! That’s right! And you know what’s worse? I hear that she might have been lying about THAT!

Anyhow, I think it’s been a relaxing weekend. I talked with my dad a lot today.

Congratulations to Brad: Biggest Nerd. He buys a new computer, and the very first program to go on there is AOL Instant Messenger.
